Iris scans might not be suitable for long-tem biometrics

28. May 2012

Over at nature.com there’s an article that shows that ageing eyes hinder biometric scans.

While it should be avoided to use this technology at any point, this article seems to show that you a) can’t reliably identify a person over long time periods or b) that you have to update the iris biometrics database frequently.

Wasting money for technology that can’t keep what the vendors promised is always a nice thing you can do with your budget. Of course the vendors will try to improve their scanners and that should cost money, at least this is how it worked in the past.

I’m not sure that security can be improved by a level that overcomes the costs.
