How to edit the torrc in Tor Browser Bundle 2.2.37-1 ?!!

16. Jun 2012

It has come to my attention that there are more people out there, who change the torrc in the Browser Bundle. Normally that’s possible from within Vidalia’s settings, but with 2.2.37-1 (containing Vidalia 0.2.19) you get the following pop-up error message:

Error at line 1: ""

That happens even when you make no attempt to change any line in the torrc. The only way to get rid of the message is to close the dialog or click on abort.

There’s ticket #6147 to track this issue.

The current workaround is to edit the file manually. To me it’s unclear on which systems it occurs, but it’s present on Windows at least.

Close the Browser Bundle. Tor should not be running by now, if it still does stop it. Go to Tor Browser\Data\Tor and open the torrc file with notepad.exe or any other text editor. Make your desired changes and save the file. Start the Tor Browser Bundle. Please check if the settings are honored by Tor.

happens on OS X 10.7.4 as well

  2. You can also remove the comments from the torrc if you don’t need them.
